Alright peeps. After my Stratford book club brainstorm session last week, I got really excited to get our own Burton book club going for 2009! For those interested, at our girl's night after the Halloween party, we decided to start a little online book club for our Burton readers.
First step: figure out logistics. How many books do we want to read/review each year? 6? We could do one every other month, don't you think? Second: let's pick our books! I have some great suggestions and I'm sure you do too. So, let's get this party started!

Wow--this blog is COOL! I'm already loving every minute of it. I have a few book suggestions (I know a lot of juvenile literature :)):
-These is My Words (Thank you Brookie)
-Pride and Prejudice
-Three Cups of Tea
-Goose Girl
-Uglies
-Cold Sassy Tree
-The Hiding Place
-The Book Theif
-Night
And that's what I have so far. I need to do some more research, I'm not that well-read. Can't wait to see all of your suggestions!
Mandi - will you please be in charge of the blog decor? I just did the basic, but you do fun ones. Please help.
Secondly, I love your book suggestions. Depending on how many books we read, I think it would be nice to have a good variety. For instance: a good classic, a good novel, a self-help, maybe a gospel, a non-fiction, a young adult fiction, etc. And, you can suggest books you haven't read too. (And, what's this business about not being well-read? Yes, you are!!) I haven't read 98% of the ones I recommended.
I'm really interested in These is My Words, Night, P&P, Cold Sassy & Goose Girl. I also really want to read Book Thief . . . we're reading it for my neighborhood book club in January.
Here are some additional suggestions (by category):
non-fiction: Left to Tell (story of woman who survives Rwandan genocide)
The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch
Let's Roll by Lisa Beamer (widow of United Flight 93 passenger)
novel: The Whistling Season by Ivan Doig
The Persian Pickle Club by Sandra Dallas
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Schaeffer
Home by Marilynne Robinson
Gilead by Marilynne Robinson (her writing is supposedly lovely)
Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See
Self-help(ish): Blink by Malcolm Gladwell
The Turning Point by Malcolm Gladwell
I'm not very well-read when it comes to self-help, gospel (embarrassing) and young adult fiction.
Look up the synopses of our suggested books on goodreads/shelfari/etc. and see what sounds interesting to you. Just throwing a bunch out there and we can eliminate in the coming days.
Can't wait!
Oh, man! I forgot my classics. Here are some I'd like to read/re-read:
My Antonia by Willa Cather
The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
Angle of Repose by Wallace Stegner
East of Eden by John Steinbeck
Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck (if you've never read this, it's a must read)
OK, this is so great. Now, I have a list a mile-long of books I'd love to read, but I will try to trim it down a bit. Here we go:
